Thank you to The Institute of Asset Management (IAM) for allowing me to share insights gained as convener of ISO 55001:2024. In this prerecorded webinar (August 2024), I unpack the 2024 revision of ISO 55001, offering a convenor’s view of ISO55001’s evolution, its enhancements, and practical implications and in places challenges throughout the review cycle.

Why the Update Matters

ISO 55001:2024 is a response to over ten years of global feedback, reflecting real-world asset management challenges across more than 50 countries. The revision adheres to the Annex SL “Harmonised Structure,” aiming to enhance clarity, scalability, and alignment with strategic objectives.

What’s New in the Standard?

Key additions and changes include:

  • Clause 4.5 – Decision‑Making & Value
A new framework ensures that every asset-related decision contributes demonstrable value—from strategy through operations.
  • 6.1.2 Risk / 6.1.3 Opportunity
Risks and opportunities are now distinct, encouraging tailored responses and reducing conflated planning approaches.
  • 6.2.1 Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP)
The SAMP is formally mandated, detailing objectives, resource allocation, and alignment with organisational goals.
  • 7.6 Data & Information / 7.7 Knowledge
These new domains reflect increased emphasis on accurate data, information management, and preserving institutional knowledge.
  • 10.3 Predictive Action
The new predictive action clause encourages anticipatory measures, moving beyond reactive and purely corrective approaches.

How to Apply These Insights?

  • Strategic alignment: Use the SAMP to bridge top-level goals with daily operations, with transparent metrics and accountability.
  • Decision-making: Implement a value-focused decision framework that spans the asset lifecycle, prioritising impact, not just process.
  • Data & knowledge: Build mechanisms to govern data and retain critical knowledge essential in an era of digital transformation and staff turnover.
  • Proactivity: Shift towards predictive analytics, enabling foresight and preventing nonconformities before they occur.

Convener’s Perspective?

This presentation underscores that ISO 55001:2024 isn’t about adding bureaucracy; it’s about embedding maturity and agility into asset management systems. Every new clause is grounded in practicality: simpler language for auditors, scalable expectations for small organisations, and orientation toward outcomes.

Summary

ISO 55001:2024 refines a decade of asset‑management evolution, focusing on:

  • Decision-making linked to value
  • Purpose-driven risk and opportunity management
  • Formal strategic planning and data value
  • Future-focused, predictive processes

It has been a personal and professional privilege to represent the Asset Management Council of Australia and Standards Australia on MB19 (Australian mirror committee for TC251) and, as Convenor, lead the review and update of ISO55001:2024
